A fun and informative three-day course in layered contemporary watercolour painting. You will be guided through the step-by-step process of building up transparent layers of paint to create a rich sense of depth. Over the three days, you will work on a colourful scene called " Mr Robin Goes on Holiday". This course is suitable for beginners and more experienced artists who want to learn about combining realistic bird portraits with colourful patterns and beautiful layered foliage. There will be exercises to practice at home if you choose to, to get the most out of the course - but this is not essential. There are detailed handouts to take away with illustrations of the process for you to recreate the process after the course as well as ideas for your own designs and compositions.

Day One

On day one you will explore creating colour palettes and colour-mixing, as well as how to use templates for easy drawing. You will also be using masking fluid, and essential component of effective layering in watercolour painting. There will also be some practice exercises to do at home if you choose to.

Day Two

On day two we will be painting the base layers of the finished artwork as well as the background foliage. There will be templates and prompts to guide you through this process as well as in class demonstrations and detailed handouts which can later prompt further versions of the artwork. Colour recipes will be provided too.

Day Three

On the third and final day we will be painting Mr Robin and the top layer of foliage. We will consider how the balance of colour flows through the artwork and add some outlining to refine the artwork and complete the effect. If you don't finish in class the work can be completed at home with the help of the handouts.
